About the Author
Paul Norkett is a retired academic living and sailing in Spain. He started
sailing in his teens and within a few years was racing, firstly with a GP14 then
a Fireball. In his twenties he crewed on racing yachts offshore and then bought
his first yacht, an Achilles 24 that he raced with little success. He completed
his Yachtmaster Exams over 30 years ago long before GPS became widely available
when the sextant used to be part of navigation training and you were tested in
morse code and signal flags. Gradually he bought larger yachts ending up with a
40ft steel ketch. With this yacht there was far too much work and not enough
sailing so he returned to small boats having a Laser for inshore and an Anderson
22 for single-handed sailing offshore. He took the Anderson to Spain and is now
cruising in the Mediterranean. Paul is a very experienced sailor having made
many single-handed passages and a yacht delivery to the Greek Islands.
